Large Print

When selecting reading materials for student with vision impairment the colour contrast, font size and glare factor of materials need to be considered. Look for books which have text printed on a white or solid colour background, separate from the picture or image. A range of reading materials in large print formats are available for student loan and include:

  • Novels printed in various fonts and sizes upon request.
  • Textbooks that are adapted to reduce visual clutter
  • Commercially produced large print novels.
  • Standardised readers and popular reading series with clear contrast and large font size.
  • NAPLAN practice materials and past tests.
  • SSABSA practice materials and past exams.

Novels, picture books and texts are adapted by the Braille and Alternative Print Program into Large Print.

Requests can be made through the SASVI Resource Centre librarian. Request Forms

Braille

Braille books and resources are produced on site by the Alternative Print Program.

The Resource Centre has an extensive collection of Braille texts which can be borrowed by students whose prefered reading medium is Braille.

Below is a list of resources available:

  • Tactile Picture Books are hand made by SASVI staff using collage techniques to create and build tactile pictures which encourage young students to explore and engage with the story whilst developing their tactile discrimination skills.
  • Braille books with print are ideal for parents who are blind/vision impaired to read to their sighted children, or for Braille reading students to share with their sighted siblings.
  • Fiction and Non-fiction texts are available for students to borrow. Many books nominated by Australian Children's Book Council Award and Premiers Reading Challenge have been transcribed into Braille.
  • Some of the textbooks required by students in Primary and Secondary schooling are available for loan. Requests can be made for textbooks to be transcribed into Braille if the Resource Centre is not able to locate a suitable copy.
  • Braille Music is transcribed using a unique code. Requests can be made for music to be transcribed into Braille.
